“Empower HER – Uniting Against Harassment and Advocating for Justice”

Report

In alignment with the UGC Awareness Campaign on Women Harassment and Violence (Prevention, Prohibition, Redressal), the Outreach Club of SDNB Vaishnav College organized a highly impactful awareness programme titled “Empower HER: Uniting Against Harassment and Advocating for Justice” on 10th December 2024.

This event aimed to raise awareness about the legal frameworks designed to protect women and children from harassment and violence, including:

  • The Domestic Violence Act, 2005
  • The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013
  • The POCSO Act, 2012
  • Special Rights under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023

Objectives of the Awareness Programme: “Empower HER – Uniting Against Harassment and Advocating for Justice”

  1. Raise awareness about legal provisions like the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Sexual Harassment Act, 2013, POCSO Act, 2012, and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
  2. Foster a culture of prevention and zero tolerance toward harassment and violence.
  3. Empower participants to identify, report, and combat harassment effectively.
  4. Promote advocacy for gender equality and justice.
  5.  Support UGC’s mission of prevention, prohibition, and redressal of harassment and violence.
  6. Build a safe, inclusive, and supportive campus community.

Strength of the Programme :

  1. Expert Session by Ms. Jamuna Ramajeyam:

This event featured an enlightening session by Ms. Jamuna Ramajeyam, a renowned Leadership Coach, POSH Consultant, Psychological Consultant, and Human Resource Manager. She detailed the provisions of the discussed acts, focusing on their implementation and the steps for prevention, prohibition, and redressal. Her engaging presentation and real-life examples left a lasting impact on the audience.

  1. Interactive Discussion:

This session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students and staff clarified their doubts and shared their perspectives on addressing harassment and violence.

Challenges

Despite the programme’s success, there were a few challenges. Time constraints limited the depth of discussion on certain topics, and the diverse audience (students and staff) had varying levels of understanding, making it difficult to tailor the content to everyone’s needs. While the interactive Q&A session was valuable, some participants were hesitant to engage due to the sensitive nature of the subject. Additionally, while the session provided useful knowledge, translating this into real-world action could be a long-term challenge. Cultural sensitivities also needed to be navigated, as the audience came from varied backgrounds.

Outcomes :

  1. Empowered over 205 students and staff with knowledge of key legal frameworks.
  2. Strengthened the campus’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment.

Conclusion:

This programme successfully combined education and creative engagement, advancing the objectives of the UGC awareness campaign. The Outreach Club extends its heartfelt gratitude to the management, Ms. Jamuna Ramajeyam, and all participants for making the event a resounding success.
