Consumer Awareness
Report :
The resource person, Dr.Akila Balakrishnan Mam addressed the students about Consumer awareness and how it plays a key role in making the economy a strong economy and helps ensure fair and ethical business practices. She also made sure that the students are educated
about how the consumers should be aware of their legal rights, including the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard. She explained how, when the consumers are aware of their rights, they can make informed decisions, which can lead to better quality products and services and also how they can help drive businesses to prioritize quality, safety, and ethical conduct. This can lead to increased market competition and innovation, which benefits both consumers and businesses. She also induced the knowledge to the students about
how the technology advances impact the consumer and their rights and responsibilities and that the consumer must remain vigilant when making online purchases or any purchases regarding goods and services after knowing about their rights and responsibilities.
Program Outcome :
Students gained valuable insights into the knowledge of consumer awareness and also how we should be aware about the products that we are consuming .
Consumer Awareness about Standards
Report :
An orientation program on Consumer Awareness about Standards was conducted on 27/12/2024 at Seminar Hall 1. The program aimed to educate students about the importance of standardization, quality assurance, and consumer rights. It was organized by the Standards Club (BIS).
Objectives : The key objectives of the program were:
- To raise awareness about national and international standards.
- To educate students on their rights and responsibilities.
- To highlight the role of standardization in ensuring product safety and quality.
- To promote the adoption of certified products and services.
Program Details : The orientation program commenced with an inaugural session where Dr. A. Rajendra Prasad, Dean, Student Affairs, Sairam Institutions, Chennai, addressed the participants on the significance of consumer awareness and standardization. This was followed by interactions of students with the resource person, BIS care app installation in all participants mobile and feed back session.
The major topics covered during the program included:
- Understanding Consumer Rights: Discussion on the rights of consumers as per the Consumer Protection Act.
- Importance of Standardization: Explanation of how standardization enhances product quality and consumer safety.
- Role of BIS and ISO: Overview of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in setting global and national standards.
- Identifying Certified Products: Guidance on recognizing standard marks such as ISI, Hallmark, and Agmark.
- Grievance Redressal Mechanisms: Information on consumer helplines, legal support, and dispute resolution.
Participation: The program witnessed active participation from students of various science streams. Around 160 participants attended the event and engaged in interactive sessions and Q&A discussions.

National Consumer Day
Report:
Standards-Essay Writing Competition was conducted by the Standards Club in IT block, Room No: M15 from 12:00 Noon to 01.00 pm on 03.1.2025. Writing encourages and enhances critical thinking, creative thinking and helps in organising thoughts and improve communication skills. In this competition, students from various departments participated. For this competition, the judge was Dr. Indira from PG Department of Chemistry. The topic was Helmet. The students have to write an essay in this topic covering scope, Impact Absorption Test, Resistance-to-penetration Test, Rigidity test, references, packing and packaging, marking and BIS certification marking. The participants enthusiastically participated in this competition. Finally, the judges selected three winners from the participants.

Students showcased their artistic and innovative skills by creating posters that depicted the significance of green marketing, including eco-friendly products, sustainable business practices, and the importance of reducing environmental impact and by transforming waste materials into useful and decorative items. The posters reflected various themes such as renewable energy, biodegradable packaging, and corporate social responsibility. Items such as newspaper baskets, plastic bottle planters, decorative flowers out of old cloth bags, and cardboard wall hangers were crafted, emphasizing the importance of reduce, reuse, and recycle. The competition was judged based on creativity, relevance to the theme, clarity of message, and presentation. The winning posters stood out for their originality and effectiveness in conveying the concept of green marketing and Students used discarded items creatively to send a strong message about waste management and environmental conservation.

The Debate was successfully conducted on 14/02/2025. The event aimed to enhance awareness among students about consumer rights, responsibilities, and ethical consumption practices. Participants engaged in a structured debate, discussing key consumer issues such as misleading advertisements, fair trade, and consumer protection laws. The debate fostered critical thinking, public speaking skills, and awareness of consumer rights.
The program was attended by 172 students and faculty members, with active participation from various academic departments. Judges and moderators provided constructive feedback, making the event a valuable learning experience. The program concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony for winners and participants.

The Video Awareness Program of Consumer Club was successfully conducted on 12.02.2025 at MINI AUDITORIUM . The program aimed to educate students about consumer rights, ethical consumption, and responsible purchasing decisions through engaging video content. A series of informative videos covering topics such as misleading advertisements, consumer protection laws, and sustainable consumption were screened. The initiative encouraged students to be more conscious consumers and equipped them with essential knowledge to make informed choices.
The event was attended by 173 students and faculty members from various academic disciplines. After the screenings, an interactive discussion session was held, allowing participants to share their insights and opinions. The program concluded with a summary of key takeaways and a pledge by students to promote consumer awareness in their daily lives.
