M.Sc Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics (SFS)

The Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics (FSND) was established in 2018 under the Postgraduate Programme in Home Science with the vision of nurturing competent professionals in the fields of nutrition, dietetics and food science. The M.Sc. FSND programme was introduced to meet the increasing demand for qualified experts in therapeutic nutrition, public health, food safety and product development. With a strong academic foundation and a research-oriented approach, the department ensures that students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise needed to address emerging challenges in health and nutrition.

The department emphasizes experiential learning through internships, industrial visits, workshops and participation in national and international seminars. Students benefit from advanced laboratories in Microbiology, Physiology, Analytical Techniques, Dietetics and Food Science, alongside ICT-enabled classrooms that enhance academic engagement. A unique feature of the department is its dedicated Diet Counselling Cell, which provides students with real-time exposure to clinical and community nutrition practices. In addition, students are encouraged to upskill through certified online courses offered by SWAYAM-MOOC, NPTEL and Coursera, while value-added programmes focus on leadership, communication, entrepreneurship and digital literacy.

Guided by experienced faculty, students are mentored in research, paper presentations and collaborative projects that promote innovation and professional growth. Graduates of the M.Sc. FSND programme have diverse career opportunities as Clinical Dietitians, Public Health Nutritionists, Food Product Developers and Food Safety Analysts. With a growing global focus on health, nutrition and sustainability, the department continues to prepare students to contribute meaningfully to individual well-being, community health and the food industry.
