Handling Household Injuries: First Aid Tips and When to Seek a Plastic Surgeon
Report
The Inauguration of the Fitness and Wellness Club was conducted by Shrimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College for Women (Autonomous) in collaboration with the PG Department of Social Work and Department of Physical Education. The session began with a welcome address, followed by the reading of the profiles of the resource persons. The principal then honored the chief guests in recognition of their valuable presence.
The highlight of the program was the Awareness Session on “Handling Household Injuries: First Aid Tips and When to Seek a Plastic Surgeon.” The session was led by eminent doctors from Gleneagles Global Hospital, Chennai – Dr. Selva Seetharaman, HOD & Senior Consultant, and Dr. Srividya, Associate Consultant from the Institute of Plastic, Reconstructive & Micro Vascular Surgery.
They delivered a detailed talk on how plastic surgery plays a key role in treating injuries, how to respond with first aid during household accidents, and when it becomes necessary to consult a plastic surgeon. The doctors also addressed vital health topics like breast cancer awareness, breast size reduction surgery, and medical concerns related to intimate health. In addition, they emphasized personal hygiene, body care, and modern treatments for physical injuries and conditions.
Strength Of the Program
The presence of experienced medical professionals from a reputed hospital lent credibility and depth to the awareness session. The topic was relevant and impactful, as it not only addressed common household injuries but also brought focus to lesser-discussed yet critical health issues like breast cancer and intimate health. The openness and clarity with which the doctors spoke created a safe space for participants to learn and ask questions, fostering a culture of preventive health care and early intervention.
Challenges
Some participants felt shy or hesitant to engage fully, especially when sensitive topics like breast health and intimate hygiene were discussed. Cultural taboos and personal discomfort may have prevented open conversations. There was limited time for interaction, which made it difficult for everyone to ask questions or clarify their doubts.
Recommendations For Improvement
To build on the success of this initiative, future sessions can incorporate interactive segments such as live first-aid demonstrations or role-plays for better engagement and practical understanding. Anonymous Q&A sessions or feedback mechanisms can help participants feel more comfortable addressing sensitive health concerns. It is also recommended to conduct follow-up sessions or workshops that focus in detail on specific subtopics like menstrual hygiene, injury response kits, or early signs of breast cancer. Collaborating with NGOs or health organizations could further enrich content and extend the impact to a larger community.
Program Outcome
The participants gained clear awareness on how to handle household injuries through proper first aid measures and understood the situations that require the attention of a plastic surgeon. The session provided detailed information on important health issues such as breast cancer, breast reduction surgery, and treatment for problems related to private parts. The resource persons explained the medical approaches and procedures used in plastic surgery to treat injuries and restore body function. Through this session, students became more informed about health conditions that are often not openly discussed, and learned how to take timely and appropriate action in case of physical injuries or health concerns.
