The Research department of English SDNB Vaishnav College in collaboration with the research department of English Presidency College and Queens College organiseda one-day seminar on 31st Jan 2025. This topic aimed to explore the representation of women and life in cinema. The seminar commenced with the prayer song, invoking an auspicious beginning and settling a reflective mode for the session. This was followed by the welcome address, delivered by Dr.Sitharthan, Presidency College, Chennai and he also moderated the session. The Principal, Dr.K.Kanthimathi and head of the English Department, Ms. S.Ezhilarasi, felicitated the panelists. The organising committee warmly greeted the esteemed guest, faculty members, and the students. The dignitaries were introduced. The panel consisted of: Mr. Jaya Prakash Radhakrishnan(Film Director), Mr. Sri Saravanan(Cinematographer), Mr. KaleshRamanand (Actor) and Miss AnushaPrabhu(Actor). Around 100 Students from SDNB Vaishnav College, Presidency College and Queen Mary’s College enthusiastically participated in the event. The panelists shared their insights on the portrayal of women in cinema. The connection between film and literature and the influence of real life experiences on storytelling was discussed at great length.
The discussion on how cinema has evolved overtime from reinforcing stereotypes to breaking various roles and portraying independent female characters was highlighted.DrSitharthan provided an academic perspective, drawing connections between literature and cinema. Mr. JayaPrakash Radhakrishnan spoke about the role of cinema, gender and identity. Mr Sri Saravanan spoke about visual story telling. Following this the seminar had Question and Answer session. Students raised their doubts by asking thought provoking questions. The discussion provided students with a deeper understanding of the challenges and stereotypes in the film industry. The seminar concluded with the vote of thanks.
