M.Sc Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology (SFS)

The Postgraduate Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology was established in 2006 as part of the Basic Science postgraduate programmes, with a vision to combine academic excellence with research innovation in plant sciences. Supported by a team of highly qualified faculty with expertise in Algology, Taxonomy, Microbiology, Plant Tissue Culture and Environmental Biotechnology, the department provides students with a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied aspects of plant biology. The curriculum is research-oriented and interdisciplinary, incorporating inputs from allied disciplines such as Chemistry, Biostatistics and Environmental Sciences.

Well-equipped laboratories with advanced facilities, including UV-Vis Spectrophotometers, PCR systems, Electrophoresis units, Fermenters and Microtomes, create an ideal environment for experimental learning. The department regularly organizes seminars, workshops and training sessions on areas like bioenzyme production, micropropagation, plant identification and herbal product formulation, enabling students to develop hands-on skills. Faculty members actively contribute to research through publications in reputed journals, while students are encouraged to publish and present their work in national and international forums, enhancing their academic and professional profiles.

Graduates of the department have established careers across Biopharmaceuticals, Government R&D, Herbal and Ayurvedic industries, Environmental Monitoring, Organic Farming and Academic Research. Many alumni hold positions such as Plant Biotechnologist, QC Analyst, Environmental Consultant, Molecular Lab Analyst and Assistant Professor. The department also guides students aspiring for higher education and fellowships, including CSIR-NET and DBT-BET. With a strong focus on both academic training and entrepreneurship, particularly in areas like medicinal plant cultivation and agri-biotech startups, the department continues to nurture skilled professionals contributing to science, society and sustainable innovation.
