Mathematics (SFS)

The Department of Mathematics has a rich academic legacy dating back to 1967–68, when it was first introduced as an allied subject to support the then Pre-University Class (PUC). In 1970, Mathematics emerged as a major degree programme, laying a strong foundation for higher studies in the discipline. To meet the growing demand, the department expanded further by launching the B.Sc. Mathematics programme under the self-financing stream in 1991. Over the years, the department distinguished itself by offering the maximum number of allied courses across disciplines, extending its academic contribution to programmes in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cognitive Systems and even the Commerce stream, thereby benefitting a large number of undergraduate students.

The department is known for nurturing analytical ability, logical reasoning and critical thinking among its students, enabling them to carry forward the spirit of mathematical inquiry in diverse fields. Celebrations of National Mathematics Day and Pi Day form an integral part of departmental activities, providing students with opportunities to engage in lectures, seminars and interactive events that highlight the contributions of mathematicians to society. Alumni also actively participate in these events, sharing their career experiences and inspiring the younger generation. In addition, the department conducts outreach programs designed to engage school students through interactive sessions, sparking interest in mathematics beyond the classroom.

The postgraduate programme in Mathematics was introduced in 2004, marking another milestone in the department’s journey. Although the self-financing undergraduate programme was temporarily suspended in the academic year 2023–2024, the department continues to uphold its commitment to academic excellence and its legacy of fostering mathematical knowledge, inquiry and application across disciplines.
