Sanskrit (SFS)
Established in 1984 under the Self-Finance stream, the Department of Sanskrit plays a vital role in preserving and disseminating India’s classical heritage. With a strong commitment to academic excellence, the department offers a curriculum rooted in the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) framework, promoting a holistic understanding of language, literature, culture and ethics. The recently revised syllabus offers students a broad spectrum of Sanskrit learning—encompassing classical poetry, prose, drama, didactic texts and rhetorical aesthetics (Alaṅkāraśāstra). It also features modern Sanskrit compositions and Sanskrit translations of Tamil classics such as the Tirukkural and Nālaḍiyār. Additionally, Vedic Mathematics is offered as a non-major elective, fostering both cross-cultural appreciation and ethical reflection.
Grammar is taught progressively across levels, along with basic translation skills to strengthen comprehension and expression. The department also emphasizes values-based education and literary analysis, encouraging students to engage with Sanskrit not just as a language, but as a medium of timeless wisdom. In addition to its curriculum, the Department provides a holistic learning environment through workshops, seminars, guest lectures and webinars. As a custodian of India’s classical knowledge, the Department of Sanskrit fosters both preservation and innovation, empowering learners to engage deeply with heritage while applying its insights to modern academic and professional contexts.
