English (SFS)

The Department of English was established in 1984 under the Self-Finance stream, affiliated with the University of Madras, with a strong focus on enhancing students’ language proficiency. Since its inception, the Department has offered Foundation English to all first-year Undergraduate students in the Arts and Science streams, as well as to second-year students in the Science stream. The course emphasizes fluency, grammatical accuracy and critical thinking, enabling students to communicate effectively in academic and professional settings. With engaging lessons, interactive activities and a focus on both spoken and written communication, the Department prepares students not only for competitive examinations but also for future career challenges.

In addition to its curriculum, the Department provides a holistic learning environment through workshops, seminars, guest lectures and webinars on a wide range of topics, from literature and communication skills to professional development. The Department further supports learning with a well-equipped library, offering a rich collection of books, reference materials and literary works.

Recognizing the growing demand for advanced studies in English, the Department introduced the Bachelor of Arts in English under the Self-Finance stream in 2021. This programme provides students with an in-depth understanding of language, literature, critical theories and linguistics. With its blend of academic rigor, skill-based training and supportive resources, the Department of English continues to nurture confident, competent and career-ready graduates who excel in both academic and professional domains.
