COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

B.Sc.(Statistics) programme offered by the Department of Statistics has a curriculum designed with a vision to suit Industry and Higher education requirements. A strong syllabi for core and core electives courses, taught with great rigour ensures students mobility towards higher education. Courses on latest software and programming languages like R programming, C++ Programming, SPSS, MSEXCEL, MS-ACCESS are offered to cater to industry needs leading to good placements. Hands-on training on Exploratory Data Analysis through group Mini Projects is a salient feature of the programme. Apart from these students take-up Computing Skills as a Self Learning Component and Spoken Tutorials offered by Ministry of HRD and IIT Bombay as soft-skills component.

JOB OPPURTUNITIES

Students graduating from B.Sc.(Statistics) programme are well versed in handling latest Statistical Software and Programming Languages along a sound theoretical knowledge in the subject. Given the demand for Data Science professionals in the industry ample job opportunities are available in IT industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Hospitals, Marketing &Financial Sector and Higher education. Undergraduate students secure job placements in TCS, CTS, WIPRO as analyst while Postgraduate students have been placed in companies like BCG Vaccine, ICON Clinical Industry National Health Mission, Agarda Health Sciences as Biostatisticians, JIPMER, Sankar Nethralaya as research project fellows.

PROFILE OF DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS

Department of Statistics has been offering B.Sc.(Statistics) programme from 1984 and M.Sc.(Biostatistics) programme from 2007 with affiliation from University of Madras. The Department was recognised as a Research department by the University of Madras from 2012 for offering M.Phil. & Ph.D. Programmes in Statistics. So far 22 M.Phil. scholars & one Ph.D. scholar have graduated from the department while one Ph.D. scholar has submitted the Thesis to University of Madras. Currently 3 full time & 4 part time Ph.D. scholars are pursuing their research in the broad areas of Multivariate analysis, Survival Analysis, generalised Linear Models & Fuzzy Data Analysis under faculty from the department.

The department has well equipped Research Laboratory having 15 computers with internet facility & latest Licensed software like IBM SPSS Statistics 23, AMOS & SYSTAT and freely downloadable R programming Language apart from excellent computer labs provided by the College for conducting courses on software & computer programmes. Undergraduate students are offered programming skills in C/C++ & R language and MS EXCEL & SPSS for Data Analysis & group mini-projects for hands on training. Post graduate students are offers courses on latest research areas like Categorical Data Analysis, Multivariate Analysis, Data Mining Techniques & SAS programming to suit both Industry & Higher education needs.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES

The department aims at promoting scientific research temper among the students through internships in institutions of national repute, projects & encouraging research paper presentations by PG/UG students in National Conferences. Eminent subject experts from International & National institutes of repute are invited regularly for Seminars & Workshop on current research areas for keeping abreast with latest developments. Students’ are encouraged to participate organise in intercollegiate activities through departmental association activities. Awareness programmes on various Online MOOCs like SWAYAM/NPTEL, COURSERA etc. is conducted by the faculty. Student research activities and developing critical thinking is also given a lot of encouragement. Excellent Mentoring provided by faculty for professional and personal development.

Students’ Achievements’

  • Aishwarya R. of M.Sc. (Biostatistics) received a summer research fellowship by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore for two months in 2018 with a stipend of Rs.5,000 pm. She worked on “Spatio Temporal Analysis on factors influencing the Visceral Leishmanias & Disease” at CSIR – National Chemical Laboratory Pune.
  • Savitha S of III B.Sc (Statistics) has been admitted to the Master’s Programme in Statistics by University of Glasgow, UK. from the academic year 2019- 2020.
  • Swetha M of B.Sc (Statistics) (of 2012-2015 Batch) obtained Masters in Applied Statistics from University of Nottingham, UK in 2017.
  • Sivagami of B.Sc (Statistics) (of 2012-2015 Batch) obtained M.Sc in Biostatistics &Demography from International Institute of Population Studies, Mumbai.
  • R.Anjana, Nivetha.S & M.Madhura presented research papers at the International Conference on Statistics & Big Data Bioinformatics in Agricultural Research” at ICRISAT Hyderabad in Nov 21-23, 2016
